Scope and Content Note
This collection contains correspondence between Lillian Bader-Stern's daughter Dorit Whiteman and Else Lange. In the letters they exchange recollections of Bader-Stern's life and of the Stern Girls' School in Vienna (Stern'sche Mädchen- Lehr- und Erziehungsanstalt), and of how their own lives unfolded during and after emigration from Austria. There is also a photocopy of a brochure for the Stern School, as well as extensive handwritten lists of the school's pupils.

Biographical Note
Lillian Bader, née Stern, was born in 1893 in Vienna, and grew up both in Vienna and Teplitz (now Teplice, Czech Republic), where her father worked for an insurance company. From approximately 1919-1938 she succeeded her mother as director of the Stern Girls' School in Vienna (Stern'sche Mädchen- Lehr- und Erziehungsanstalt). The school, located at Werdertorgasse 12-14, had been founded by relatives of the Sterns in 1863 and enjoyed a prestigious reputation throughout the Austro-Hungarian empire. At the time of the school's founding, it was the first school in Vienna to provide higher education for girls. Lillian Bader attended the school and eventually was accepted to the University of Vienna. She studied chemistry and received her doctoral diploma in 1919. A year earlier she had married the physician Erwin Bader, an officer in the Austrian army. Her two daughters were born in 1921 and 1924. In 1938 she emigrated with her family to England, where she worked as a maid, and once more in 1940 to the United States.

Abstract
This collection contains some recollections of the Stern School (Stern'sche Mädchen- Lehr- und Erziehungsanstalt) in Vienna, and of one its directors, Lilian Bader née Stern. There are also several lists of the schools' students from 1912 until the Anschluss.
