Scope and Content Note

This collection holds correspondence and some personal papers of Anne Fischer. The bulk of the collection consists of letters exchanged between herself and her close friend Hermann Simon. A small amount of correspondence with other individuals and a few personal papers are additionally present.

The handwritten correspondence between Anne Fischer and Hermann Simon is particularly extensive; the two friends wrote each other a few times a week from the 1930s through the 1950s, with less frequent but still regular correspondence during the 1960s snd 1970s. These letters comprise Subseries 1 and 2 of Series I. Perusal of this material provides a detailed look into the lives of Anne Fischer and Hermann Simon, as well as the prominent events of members of their families and friends. With such a large amount of correspondence, the letters discuss numerous subjects, including the immigration of themselves and their family members, their work, political developments, travel, litarature and entertainment, and news of family and friends.

Some material pertaining to Fischer family members may also be found in this collection. The final subseries of Series I holds several folders of letters of family members, including correspondence from Eva and George Fischer to their mother, as well as some correspondence from Hedwig Rosenberg to her daughter. Series II contains some family papers as well, especially documentation related to the medical career of Bernard Rosenberg. Series II additionally contains a detailed horoscope for Anne Fischer and some ration books for Fischer family members from World War II.

Biographical Note

Anne Fischer was born on August 12, 1902 in Stuttgart. She was the daughter of the physician Bernard Rosenberg and his wife Hedwig Rosenberg née Lerchenthal, and she had an older brother, Eric.

Anne Fischer married the physician Ernst Fischer, and they had two children: George and Eva. Anne Fischer went to the United States with her children in August 1934, following her husband who had immigrated earlier. The family first settled in Rochester before moving to Richmond, Virginia. She returned to Germany several times following World War II.

Abstract

This collection contains the correspondence and personal papers of Anne Fischer. The bulk of the material consists of nearly five decades of continuous correspondence between Anne Fischer and Hermann Simon. In addition, there is a very small amount of official documents of family members and a few photographs.
