Historical Note

David Fintz Altabé (1929-2008), was an internationally known scholar and poet specializing in Judeo-Spanish literature and Sephardic culture. He served twice as President of the American Society of Sephardic Studies as well as Vice-President of the American Association of Jewish Friends of Turkey. He also was on the Sephardic Council of Overseers and taught Spanish at the City University of New York were he was honored as Professor Emeritus. He was born in New York to Sephardic parents of Turkish origin and passed away in November 2008. Some of his works include:

Abstract

This collection contains the work of Sephardic scholar and poet David Fintz Altabé. The bulk of this collection consists of lectures and several poems, in addition to a newspaper clipping.

Arrangement

The collection was arranged so that additional material could be added at a later date. Therefore the categories of arrangement were imposed by the archivist processing the collection and did not derive from any pre-affixed arrangement.

Due to the small size of this collection there is no need to divide it into series for accessibility. Instead the contents have been foldered with like material and arranged in a chronological manner. There are three folders in this collection.

  1. Lectures
  2. Poems
  3. Clippings

Related Material

The American Sephardic Federation, and some of the other members of the Center for Jewish History have a number of works by David Fintz Altabé in their collections. These organizations also possess a variety of resources delaing with Sephardic culture and language that may be value.
