Scope and Content Note

The collection contains primarily documents relating to Ludwig Neumann's attempts to emigrate to a variety of countries, as well as other professional and personal correspondence.

Folder 1 contains correspondence between the Hirschland Bank and the company Neumann and Mendel, as well as legal correspondence from the lawyer Dr. Ernst Levy. There is also a contract of purchase between Ernst Hirschland and Emil Neumann for half of a house and a note regarding Ludwig Neumann's injury during World War I. Folder 2 contains correspondence between Ludwig Neumann, his destitute uncle Jacques Stern, and Dr. Ernst Levy concerning the financial situation of Stern and Neumann's provision of financial assistance. Folders 3 and 4 contain documents related to Neumann's various efforts to emigrate and folder 5 contains miscellaneous patent documents, formulas for cleaning solutions, employment documents, meeting minutes for the Institute of Industrial Administration, Merseyside Centre Research Group and other miscellanea.

The 7 page testimony in folder 7 describes Irmgard's Smurka's war-time experiences in Berlin as the Jewish wife of a German Christian who abandoned her while she was pregnant. She and her daughter survived the war but the daughter died of diphtheria in 1945. It is unclear how the contents of folder 7 relate to Ludwig Neumann.
