Scope and Content Note

The Frederick Lachmann collection consists of fragmentary materials that allow us all but a glance into the life and professional activities of Frederick Lachmann and members of his family.

The core of the collection consists of printed copies of articles that Frederick Lachmann wrote for Aufbau.

Other professional related materials include a large number of photographs from various meetings and events of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation for which Frederick Lachmann served as a Vice-President.

Additionally, there are photographs of family and friends, a few letters (including five letters written by Martin Buber and addressed to Fritz Lachmann), musical scores, and writings by Fritz Lachmann and Frederick Lachmann.

Biographical Note

Frederick Lachmann was born in Berlin in 1909. He worked as a journalist in Berlin before escaping to the United States. He also served as Vice-President of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and published extensively on the topic of the history of Jewish art. Most of his articles appeared in Aufbau.

The core of the collection consists of printed copies of articles that Frederick Lachmann wrote for Aufbau. Also included in the collection are correspondence, photographs, and writings.

The collection consists of a single series. Materials are grouped by topics in the following order: correspondence, photographs, printed materials, sheet music, writings, and various materials.
