Scope and Content Note

This collection contains Simon Kaufmann's residency permit for Lichtenau, Baden (1819), a few letters sent from Kaufmann family members in mid-19th century Georgia, and a genealogical chronicle of Simon Kaufmann's family.

The correspondence consists of letters sent by Simon Kaufmann's sons, all in Georgia, United States to their family still in Lichtenau (Baden), Germany. The last of the four letters (1863) describes conditions in Georgia during the Civil War. The manuscript located in the second folder consists of both narrative sections and genealogical tables which trace the history and migrations of the Kaufmann and Straus families. Included in the manuscript is a large number of photocopied and transcribed official documents, family correspondence, and photographs from Germany and the United States, largely originating in the 19th century. This manuscript was compiled by an American descendant of the Kaufmann family. See the manuscript's table of contents for more detailed information.

Biographical Note

Simon Kaufmann was a merchant resident in Lichtenau (Baden), Germany. His sons Julius, Max, and Karl (Charles) all emigrated to Georgia around 1850. The manuscript in folder 2 indicates that this may have been the result of the events surrounding the failed 1848 revolution in Germany.
