Scope and Content Note

The collection contains official and private documents (originals or photocopies) pertaining to Jews in Bohemia during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Folder 1 contains photocopies of three decrees and their translations into English by George Rudinger. Two decrees, from November 1787 and December 1787, deal with the German first names available to Jews in Bohemia. The third decree, from Auggust 1797, deals with several aspects of Jewish life in Bohemia, including religious practices, education, community constitution, census, means of livelihood, political and legal authorities, and obligations toward the state.

Folder 2 contains four original documents from in Prague in the 19th century. Of special interest is an 1848 printed pamphlet pertaining to Jewish emigration from Bohemia to America. Also included is an 1800 decree regulating the taxation of Jewish houses of worship; an 1822 birth certificate for Rosalia, daughter of Anna Schulhof; and an 1864 certificate for the tradesman Nathan Klemperer.
