Scope and Content Note

The Arthur Czellitzer Collection is arranged in 5 series and includes personal material, manuscripts, newspaper clippings and correspondence.

The biggest part of the collection contains manuscripts of genealogical studies and creative fiction.

The first series contains family documents relating to Arthur Czellitzer and his family.

The second series contains documents regarding the Gesellschaft fuer juedische Familienforschung.

Series III includes Arthur Czellitzer's manuscripts, among them creative fiction and papers on genealogical studies and standards of beauty. Also included is a reprint of one of his articles from 1924.

Series IV contains Margarete Czellitzer's correspondence after Arthur Czellitzer's death, mostly dealing with a continuing interest in his work and a detailed genealogy of her, written by her husband, Arthur Czellitzer.

Series V contains newspaper clippings on various topics.

Biographical Note

Arthur Czellitzer was born in Breslau in 1871. He was a well known ophthalmologist and founded a private hospital in Berlin in 1907. He was the founder and president of the Gesellschaft fuer Juedische Familienforschung (1924-1938). In 1938 he immigrated to Holland, and was killed in Sobibor in 1943. He also wrote creative fiction.
