Henry Heinz Brecher Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains documentation of the Henry Heinz Brecher family, including a questionnaire, vital records, articles, photographs, correspondence, and family trees.
Folder 1 contains a questionnaire filled out by Henry Heinz Brecher regarding his life in Austria before World War II, emigration from Austria to the United States, and life in the United States. Also included are vital records, including birth register excerpts and birth certificates for Brecher, his father Ernst (Ernő) Brecher, and Ernst's siblings Norbert, Sidonie (Szidónia), Richard, and Oscar (Oszkár); and articles about the history of Jews in Graz and Simon Rendi, former president of the Jewish Community of Graz.
Folder 2 contains photographs of Henry Heinz Brecher and his family, including his mother Klara Brecher née Taussig; maternal grandparents Richard Taussig and Gisela Breuer Taussig; father Ernst Brecher; paternal grandparents Max (Miksa) Brecher and Rudolfine (Rudolfina) Brecher née Rosenbaum; aunt Sidonie Benčić née Brecher; uncle Norbert Brecher; great-uncle Simon Rendi; and Henry Heinz Brecher's childhood home in Graz.
Folder 3 contains family correspondence dated from 1938 to 1944 regarding family members' emigration from Europe and the fates of various family members during World War II. Photocopies of the original correspondence are accompanied by typed German-language transcripts and English-language translations. Also included are Brecher and Taussig family trees.

Biographical Note
Henry Heinz Brecher was born Heinz Brecher on August 29, 1932, in Graz. After the Anschluss, his parents sent him to live with relatives in Zagreb, where he stayed for three years. After these relatives emigrated, he subsequently stayed with several other families before arrangements were made to have him taken to Split, which was in the Italian-occupied part of Yugoslavia. Heinz lived in Split until the Italian capitulation and subsequent German occupation of this part of Yugoslavia. After a brief detention in Split in spring 1944, they made their way a displaced persons camp in Bari, Italy. They immigrated to the United States in August 1944.
