Historical Note

Pogroms against Jews, known as Kristallnacht (“night of broken glass”), occurred under the auspices of the Third Reich on November 9 - 10, 1938. The fiftieth anniversary of Kristallnacht in 1988 prompted global commemorations that were hosted by governments, religious organizations, historical societies, academic institutions and other civic groups and a vast array of materials were generated in conjunction with these commemorations.

Several individuals assembled and donated the materials that comprise this collection. Some individuals contributed their personal memoirs: Manfred Berger, Fred (Manfred) Ederer, Henry Landman, Otto S. Leib, Ernest Loeb, Ernest L. Oppenheim and Walter Schnell. A transcript of a lecture was submitted by Hermann E. Simon. Other materials were contributed by the following individuals: Miriam Gerber, Carol Herselle Krinsky, Elizabeth Lunau, Alfred Moos, and Frederick Rose.
