Dorit B. Whiteman Collection

 Collection
Identifier: AR 6168

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of the materials in this collection are drafts of articles by psychologist Dorit Whiteman on the experience of Holocaust survivors, including a full draft of the longer work The Uprooted. Additional materials include some photocopies of personal papers belonging to her mother, Lillian Stern Bader.

The first folder contains shorter manuscripts of articles on Holocaust survivors, primarily those who escaped Germany via the Kindertransport initiative. These articles often present the findings of Whiteman's research, which she conducted via interviews and questionnaires sent to survivors. The larger manuscript The Uprooted is in a similar vein: it comprises, however, a much broader study on survivors based on an extensive questionnaire. Although there are some longer sections on the experiences of displaced children, the focus is on the experience of life under the National Socialist regime, the experience of escaping this regime, and the aftermath, both short-term and long-term, of the escape. Other materials in this collection consist of a small number of photocopied documents belonging to Whiteman's mother, Lillian Stern Bader, and a list of Jewish refugees in the Netherlands.
