Franz Rosenzweig - Martin Buber notebooks

22 notebooks (carbon copies), comprising 1,998 pages, dictated by Franz Rosenzweig and addressed to Martin Buber, pertaining to the Rosenzweig-Buber translation of the bible.

19 of the 22 notebooks are dated from 1925 to 1929. No.3 - No.5 and No.7 - No.10 are dated according to the dates of the correspondence; No.11 (from p. 49 on ) - No .22 are dated page by page. There are no dates for notebooks No.1 and No.2. The latest entry in notebook No.22 is dated Dec. 6, 1929, a few days before Rosenzweig's death on Dec. 10, 1929.

The notebooks - in chronological order - follow the books of the bible. The only exception is notebook No.12, which goes back to Genesis and Exodus. There is no identification for notebooks 2, 4, 6 and 7.

The collection contains many letters by Franz Rosenzweig, dated and undated. Some letters were signed for Franz Rosenzweig, who was paralyzed since 1922. The letters do not only refer to the translation of the bible but also to the private lives of Rosenzweig and Buber, to their friends and relatives and to other academics. There are at least two references to Leo Baeck (notebook No.8, p. 54 and notebook No.9, p. 62.

11 of the 22 notebooks were examined previously by an unknown researcher. S/he added the black notations on top of the notebook-folders.

Also included is a copy of the book "Die fuenf Buecher der Weisung. Verdeutscht von Martin Buber gemeinsam mit Franz Rosenzweig" (Cologne, 1954) with handwritten notes and corrections by Martin Buber.
