Marie Malachowski Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection documents the personal and professional life of Marie Malachowski as well as the fate of other family members. It is divided into four series. Series І contains documents of immigration and those pertaining to education and work as both a nurse and a pre-school teacher. Series ІІ concentrates on letters from 1939 till 1942 between Marie Malachowski, her mother and others. The letters were mainly about family members, but do not mention information about the Holocaust or immigration. During the time of correspondence between Marie and her mother Hedwig, Marie had already fled to Britain, while her mother was still (and remained) in Germany. Both Series І and ІІ contain restitution material. Series ІІІ contains photographs documenting Marie Malachowski’s trip to Israel in 1935. Series ІV deals with genealogy, specifically with the family tree of Salomonsohn/Gedalia.

Biographical Note
Marie Malachowski was born in Breslau on May 14, 1902. Her father was the physician Ernst Malachowski, who died in 1934. Her mother, Hedwig née Salomonsohn and her sister Eva were killed in the Holocaust. Marie Malachowski immigrated to England, London, in 1939. She joined the Jewish Relief effort just after the war and became an officer in the British Army. After she had served as an officer in England she immigrated to Canada. She was a nurse by training, but worked as a teacher in Montreal. She died in Toronto in 1999. Marie Malachowski never married.
