Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the 1820 will of Rachel Jacobs Polock Cohen (1754-1820). The legal documents pertain to the suit of Samuel Nunez against Mordecai Sheftall for recovery of a slave. Included are the original petition, a depostition from Moses Nunez, and a subpoena for Mordecai Sheftall.

Contains last will and testment of Rachel J. Cohen, witnessed and signed by, among others, Robert Phillips and N. Phillips. Heirs mentioned in the will include Joseph Phillips, David M. Moses, and Mordecai M. Noah. Of special interest: Rachel bequeaths "the residue of my clothing ... to my black girl Mary Anderson." Rachel Cohen died on Nov. 1, 1821.
