Historical Note

The Zionist House was an organization founded by Yoland Markson, Jacob Gordon, Eli Cohen, Irving Usen, Benjamin Ulin, Louis Levine, Dewey Stone, Harry Levine, Mendell Selig, and Fred Monosson on October 1, 1946 to provide recreational, educational, and physical outreach for individuals and Jewish organizations in Boston. It was located at 17 Commonwealth Avenue. The founders of the House felt a great responsibility in the wake of the establishment of Israel and pledged to help the state morally and financially. In 1951, the Zionist House was requested to participate in a plan for the codification of laws for Israel. As a result, the Harvard Law School-Israel Cooperative Research for Israel’s Legal Development was formed. Additionally, the Zionist House took many trips to Israel, and became aware of a lack of resources for deaf and mute children who were doubly handicapped due to the poor facilities and equipment available to them. The House provided auditory training units and other equipment to schools in Israel. They also helped establish trade schools and the donated clothing for newcomers in the Jerusalem Corridor.

The Zionist House worked with the Weizmann Institute, Hebrew University, Hadassah Medical School, Haifa Institute of Technion, United Jewish Appeal, Israel Bonds, Jewish National Fund, and many other organizations and served as a meeting place for approximately 75 local and national Jewish organizations during its time.
