Max Weinstein and Karliner Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection documents Max Weinstein of Kassel, Germany and New York City, and his wife Gerda Weinstein née Karliner, as well as the Karliner family, of Beuthen, Germany (today Bytom, Poland) and Hartford, Connecticut.
Materials relating to Max Weinstein include birth, marriage, and death certificates; various Army orders and awards; a small family tree; and various travel and residence documents from Germany, Argentina, and the United States. The Weinstein family photographs show Max Weinstein in Germany and Argentina; in France and Africa as a soldier during World War Two; and in the United States after the war. They also show friends and family, including Max's mother Dina Weinstein. The collection also includes a large photograph of Weinstein's Army unit (Company C, 11th battalion, Camp Wheeler, Georgia).
Materials relating to the Karliner family include birth, death, and naturalization certificates; family trees and genealogical research; restitution correspondence; and travel documents for Fred, Mary, and Gerda Karliner. They also include Mary Karliner's typewritten recipes on loose-leaf paper and an article from Aufbau about the Jewish community of Beuthen.
The Karliner family photos primarily depict Fred, Mary, and Gerda Karliner. Among the dozens of photos are family snapshots, portraits, vacations, baby pictures, school class pictures, and gravestones. The Karliner family photo postcards show the Böhm and Karliner families.

Max Weinstein (1914-1974) grew up in Kassel, Germany with his parents Robert Weinstein and Dina née Goldschmidt. He emigrated in 1937 to Argentina and then to the United States, where he enlisted in the Army. Weinstein fought in World War Two in North Africa and France.
In 1947, Weinstein married Gerda née Karliner in New York City.
The Karliner family lived in Beuthen, Germany (now Bytom, Poland). Gerda Weinstein (1924-2011) and her parents, Mary (Mücke) née Böhm (1891-1987) and Friedrich (Fritz, Fred) Karliner (1888-1955) immigrated to the United States in the late 1930s and settled in Hartford, Connecticut. Fred Karliner's brother, Paul Karliner (1894-1938), died in Dachau following the Kristallnacht.

Separated Material
The following were removed to the LBI Arts and Objects collection: Three medals for World War One service, a pin with crossed swords, and a small photograph of Max Weinstein's maternal grandparents encased in a locket backed with safety pin.
