Scope and Content Note

The Papers of Hanna Spitzer (1897-1982) are arranged in a single series and include a photograph of her, various vital and official documents, such as Hanna's birth certificate and last will and testament, original correspondence, postcards, lists of her assets, inventories and enumerations of pictures in storage, relocation documents, gallery invitations, and receipts and notations about materials on loan to galleries. Also included in the collection is Edith Neumann's 1935 list of "Spitzer Pictures", an enumeration of artworks owned by the Spitzer family. Many of the letters are concerned with personal matters and with her family's art collection. Her father Alfred, who died in the spring of 1923, had collected the works of such famous artists as Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoscha.

Biographical Note

Hanna (Hansi) Spitzer was born on September 11, 1897 in Vienna, Austria. She was the daughter of the lawyer and art collector Alfred Spitzer and his wife Hermine. Hanna's younger sister was Edith Neumann, née Spitzer, a microbiologist who was married to the Congregationalist pastor Frederick Neumann. Hanna was forced to emigrate from Vienna in 1938, where she had been employed as a tutor. She eventually settled in New York, where she died in December 1982.
