This collection documents the separation, deportation, and immigration of the family of Ilse Gamper née Ostberg, as well as her personal, civic and vocational life after immigration to the United States. Medical, financial and employment records can also be found in this collection as well as correspondence and photographs.

Biographical Note
Ilse Gamper née Ostberg was born in 1912 in Essen to parents Hedwig Stern (b. Oct 21, 1881, Bochum) and Julius (b. Jan 20, 1880 in Köln) Ostberg. The Ostbergs founded, owned and operated a uniform and coat factory in Essen where Ilse worked until she immigrated to Palestine in 1934. Her parents were deported from Köln in 1941 to the Litzmannstadt (Łódź ) Ghetto in Poland. In the 1950’s Ilse immigrated to New York City and was employed as a housekeeper at Beth Israel Hospital. She married Max Gamper in 1962.

This collection has been arranged into two series.
Digitization Note
The majority of this collection has been digitized, and it has been made accessible where possible. Box 1 folders 4, 24, and 28 were not digitized because they hold negatives. The slides in box 2 were also not digitized. Access to box 1 folders 8 and 10-16 is restricted due to privacy concerns.
