Scope and Contents

Audio and transcripts of interviews with 253 German Jewish refugees, who had settled in principal metropolitan areas of the United States during the main period of immigration, 1937-1941.

Biographical / Historical

Interviewers tried to elicit an autobiographical narrative from each respondent, concentrating on some or all of the following areas: economic and social data; Jewish cultural components in the respondents’ history; attitudes and ideas toward issues of public policy; and responses concerning contemporary Jewish issues, such as the Arab-Jewish conflict, ethnicity and others. Each interview went through three drafts, the third being a final version. Each of these three versions of the interview are available in each person's folder.
